Looking for a P.E. course for the next school year?

Look no further! Scottish Country Dance is vigorous physical exercise, challenge for the mind, a great opportunity to get to know others & it's steeped in cultural education.

Scottish Country Dance (SCD) was the forerunner of American square dancing; its music the forerunner of American bluegrass. SCD is danced with pairs of folks in sets of 6 to 10 people. It really is great fun!!! Younger and older can participate (ages 8 and up).

What is great about this program is that it’s P.E. for the whole family, and a participant can actually demonstrate aptitude through their scholarship program which looks great on transcripts.

No experience necessary.

Boys do not have to wear a kilt to classes. Girls are to wear skirts below the knee. Ballet shoes or socks must be worn. (Shoes run $15-$20.)

Dues to join CSCDS are $70 (2017-2018) per person for the entire year. Returning member dues are $60 for the entire year.

Try Scottish Country Dancing!

SCD is fun and is a mental as well as physical exercise. It is a very social form of dancing as you dance with different people and constantly change partners.  It is suitable for adults and children, indeed the whole family can enjoy it together.

Scottish country dances are made up of a series of steps and formations that we learn in our weekly classes.

The individual dances we have learned in class are assembled into programs for fun social dances and demonstrations.

Dance Structure

Generally we dance in sets of three or four couples usually facing each other in lines. Most dances are based around a selection of standard moves, figures or formations including: dance up and down the middle, turn or spin, poussette, right hands across, cast off, cast up, allemande, double triangles, teapots and setting to partner. Then there are the reeling movements: normal reels, diagonal reels, mirror reels, crossing reels, double crossing reels, Inveran reels, Schiehallion reels…

Opportunities

Over the past few years, eight of the CSCDS young people have received scholarships for their dancing abilities to attend the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society's summer school in St. Andrews, Scotland. In addition, there are three students from our 2015-2016 classes who earned scholarships and went to Scotland in August!
